Dendron Provides Rapid Response to a Request for Flood Mapping Following Hurricane Mitch

With the flooding caused by Hurricane Mitch came an immediate need to map flood extent. Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) personnel in Honduras knew that RADARSAT was an obvious choice given its cloud penetration and water detection capabilities. The CIDA project contact in Canada needed a group who could quickly and capably respond to this requirement and was directed to Dendron.

Three priority areas were identified:
View Key Map

The Sula and Río Aguán valleys
Considered the manufacturing and commercial heartland of Honduras, with high population density and extensivebanana plantations, as well as beef and dairy cattle industry.

The Río Guayape valley
An important agricultural valley in the Department of Olancho where several communities reported considerable damage.

The Río Choluteca valley
High-population areas were affected, water was potentially contaminated from pesticide spillage and considerable damage was likely to the aquaculture, mixed farming and ranching sectors.

RADARSAT data collected
October 30, Standard 2 Descending
November 3, ScanSAR Narrow B Descending
November 7, Wide 2 Ascending
